Washington Attractions Update

(3 May 21)

The Smithsonian’s will open!  Udvar Hazy Air and Space Museum on 5 May!  Most others on 14 May.  The zoo on 21 May.  The National Gallery of Art (West Building) will reopen on 14 May!  Other indoor attractions that are federal government-run, owned, or operated, are still closed as of this writing.

Most non-profit-run attractions have been able to keep their doors open as they struggle for funds from admission fees.  Our favorite is Mount Vernon where they have done a great job of keeping the entire estate grounds, museum, education center, and mansion house (except the top floor) open to the public. In Gettysburg, the Seminary Ridge Museum and Cupola has reopened.  In Southern Maryland, a key Booth Escape Tour attraction, the Dr. Mudd House and Museum has reopened.

On the Virginia side, Alexandria City Museums (eg. Gadsby’s Tavern) have opened and are an excellent complement to our Old Town Alexandria Tour.  The Northern Virginia Park Authority-run Carlyle House in Alexandria is also open. Arlington Cemetery, including the viewing of the Changing of the Guard, is open.  For those that desire a view that rivals the observation deck at the Washington Monument, a similar view is available at the George Washington Masonic Memorial in Alexandria.  At nearly two-thirds the height of the Washington Monument, it allows for great views of Alexandria and the surrounding region.

For those wishing to go on a day trip out of town, a Gettysburg Battlefield Tour is still a viable option.  Currently, the Museum & Visitor Center is open Thu-Mon 9 a.m – 4 p.m.  In May, the Museum & Visitor Center will be open 9-5 daily. Battlefield experiences at Manassas, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville are also feasible.

Our website has a listing of oft-visited attractions in the area with their operating status noted.  We will update this listing periodically but it’s best to call us to get the most up-to-date information.
