Out of all 24 presidents that have served in the military, George Washington was the highest-ranking member of the armed forces, having been posthumously promoted to General of the Armies of the United States in 1976. Next in seniority is General of the Armies, John J. “Blackjack” Pershing, who is buried at Arlington.
